Roof Base Racks are the support structure for all roof racks (bike, ski, kayak) and carriers. Base Racks consist of three elements: Cross bars, towers and clips

Cross bars - The bars to which roof racks and carriers are attached

Towers - The towers connect to the roof and support the cross bars above the roof

Clips - Clips are frequently necessary to firmly connect the towers to the door jam or rain gutter
We will use the cross bar, towers and clips terms for each of the base rack brands that we carry: Thule, Yakima and Inno.
Who needs a roof base rack?
Some vehicles come with all or part of a base rack on their vehicle. These base racks are called factory or OEM racks. Factory racks may consist of side rails only or side rails plus cross bars. If your vehicle only has factory side rails you may not need clips but will generally need towers and cross bars. If your vehicle has factory side rails and cross bars you may not need anything else to attach a roof rack or carrier.
